CARFAX is a service that can provide some peace of mind to people buying a used car. It searches the car's history via its VIN number, and lets you know about any car accidents, crashes or other noteworthy events that were reported.

A CARFAX vehicle history reports costs $34.99, but it's often something you can ask a car dealership to provide you for free before you purchase a car from them.

Along the bottom of CarFax.com, there are some free services offered like lemon check, recall check, record check and problem car check.

The idea behind CARFAX is that for many people it's worth the cost to feel reasonably certain that a used car doesn't have a bad history that you wouldn't know about otherwise.

Excerpted from CarFax.com:
CARFAX receives information from more than 34,000 data sources including every U.S. and Canadian provincial motor vehicle agency plus many auto auctions, fire and police departments, collision repair facilities, fleet management and rental agencies, and more.
