Energizer History

Energizer's traces its roots to the year 1886, when Brush Electric Company executive W. H. Lawrence started the National Carbon Company today known as Energizer. In the year 1896, Energizer was the first company to sell batteries meant for consumer use. These batteries were then used to provide power for home telephones of that time.

A few years later, Russian immigrant Conrad Hubert started the basis of the American Electrical Novelty and Manufacturing Company and in 1899 started to sell what was going to be the first model of flashlight in the world. AENMC latter became a part of the Eveready Battery Company/Energizer.

Energizer Novelty

The Eveready Battery Company/Energizer was the first to manufacture and sell the 9-volt battery in 1956 and later on was the first to introduce the first batteries for transistor radios, the rechargeable nickel-cadmium batteries, the first standard alkaline battery, the first power cell to be used by hearing aids and watches, and the lithium battery technology that is still used by consumers everywhere.

In the year 1959, Energizer introduced the alkaline battery technology that will lead to longer battery life in portable, battery-operated devices. During the following years, the company continued by adding new improvements to the alkaline battery.

Energizer Breakthroughs

Since 1990, Energizer was the first manufacturer to take a step towards environment protection by eliminating mercury from the Energizer alkaline batteries and in 1992 Energizer presented the world with the first AA size lithium battery. In 1995, Energizer added on-battery tester feature that allowed customers to check the battery power directly from the power cell.

In April 2000, Energizer became an independent company that continues to manufacture advanced batteries and flashlights, including Energizer and Eveready brands batteries, photo lithium batteries, miniature batteries, rechargeable batteries, and other lighting products.

The Energizer Bunny

The Energizer bunny is a pink rabbit that plays a drum and wears sunglasses and blue sandals. Using the power of an Energizer battery, the Energizer Bunny keeps on going on and on since its first appearance in 1989. It is now a world icon for the long life span of Energizer batteries and one of the Top 5 Advertising Icons of our century, winning multiple advertising awards.

The cool bunny first appeared in television commercials and had since appeared in more than 100 television commercial spots banging its drum as a symbol of Energizer power. Aside from serving as a recognizable advertising symbol, the drum banging bunny has become a pop culture icon, perceived a symbol of longevity and determination.
