History

Interstate Bakeries was founded in 1930 in Kansas City and by 1995, the company merges, acquires and purchases several different companies. Anyway, the biggest transaction is in 1995 when Interstate Brands buys out Continental, which was the leader in bakery at the time. IBC bought Continental from Ralstons, which made a huge profit shortly after the buyout mainly because the stock jumped considerably. Charles Sullivan became the CEO of the company. The company was not extremely successful from the start mainly because Butternut and Wonder Bread ran using two different cultures thus causing some difficulties in the early days. Snacks, cakes and sweet goodies were quite profitable, actually they were more profitable than bread, mainly due to the “economies-of-scale and logistics” strategy. However, with the development of extended life enzymes for bread IBC could finally convert all those small, inefficient bakeries into giant bakery stores similar with the snacks and cakes stores. For a brief period of time prices and sales volume were affected by the Atkins diet and the Krispy Kreme doughnuts. IBC’s main competitors on the market are The Earthgrains Company, Flowers Industries, Inc. and McKee Foods Corporation.
