- Liza, our first hen and a very sweet young lady, laid her first egg when she was 20 months old, it was then time to put to practice everything we had read about incubating! Hank had built our incubating room in a old U-Haul box, very economical, not to mention cute. It was heated, air conditioned and decorated with Sesame Street wall paper border. I painted a Big Bird on the wall. Hank also built our incubator and hatcher which was also a major savings! Liz laid her first egg on a Sunday afternoon and it was a very traumatic event for everyone.........except the vet! We just happened to be in the barn when she started grasping, after a few moments we saw that she was trying to lay an egg but it was sideways. It was agreed that I'd run to the house and call the vet.........a call I'm sure he's is laughing about to this day!
