Description
About Us
Evergreen IGA is a locally owned, "Hometown Proud" supermarket. That means we're deeply committed to being more than just a great grocery store. It means we strive every day to make a difference in our community.
As a member of Independent Grocer's Alliance, a worldwide network of family oriented retailers, we share in the belief that "a good grocery store isn't a sprawling, impersonal example of cookie cutter commerce, but a community hub owned and operated by the very people who know the area best -- the citizens."
IGA was founded in 1926 by Frank Grimes, a Chicago accountant who specialized in auditing the books of wholesale grocers. His goal was to develop a network of independent grocers to compete with the burgeoning chains. Along with five associates -- Gene Flack, Louis Groebe, W. K. Hunter, H. V. Swenson, and William Thompson -- Grimes developed IGA's strategy to capitalize on the strengths of chain stores while creating opportunities for individuals to own and operate an independent business.
