Description

The Valspar Corporation is a world famous manufacturer of coatings and paints with expertise gained across two centuries of working in the business. Currently ranked fifth among all North American manufacturers of paints the Valspar Corporation has built its reputation on the Valspar varnish, a wood coating capable of maintaining its clean finish even when exposed to water. The Valspar varnish was presented to the public in 1906. Valspar coatings and paints are present in some of the most iconic buildings and around some of the most famous brands. From the Yamaha grand piano to the defining Coca Cola red and from the Hong Kong Convention Center to Lindbergh’s Spirit of St. Louis, Valspar is there to add a flawless finishing touch.

Valspar’s History

The history of the Valspar Corporation begins in 1806 when Samuel Tuck opened Paint and Color on Boston’s Broad Street. What had started as a small paint dealership became a paint producer as well in 1820 after two businessmen from Massachusetts teamed up and began producing varnishes. By 1832 the company then called Stimson & Valentine also imported and retail traded oil, beeswax, glass, and paints aside from manufacturing varnish. When the Valentine brothers Henry and Lawson became sole partners in 1860 the business was renamed Valentine & Company. The next important step in Valspar history was the hiring of legendary chemist Charles Homer who made varnishes “so perfect they could be poured from the can to the side of a carriage…” and the moving of the entire business to New York City in 1870. In 1906 during the New York Motor Boat Show the Valspar varnish was unveiled. On that occasion nine different types of varnish were applied in alternating stripes to a submarine that was submerged.

In contact with the water eight of the varnishes turned white, only the Valspar varnish maintained its color thus giving the vessel the appearance of a zebra. The Valspar varnish motto was from then on “the varnish that won’t turn white” and the reputation of the company was firmly established. In 2006 the Valspar Corporation celebrated two centuries in the coating and paint manufacturing industry. By that time the sales figures of the company reached approximately three billion dollars every year. In time, after establishing its reputation within the United States of America, Valspar began spreading its products outside the country borders as well. The Valspar Corporation acquired 80 percent of the Chinese architectural coatings, decorative wood and furniture supplier Huarun Paints, then later acquired powder coating manufacturer H.B. Fuller, thus enhancing its manufacturing capacity in Europe. Later, the company signed an agreement with Tekno S.A and became the coil coatings supplier for Brazil. By the end of 2006 more than 30 percent of Valspar’s sales figure came from international sales.
