Description

Excerpted from the website:

York’s Shona Gallery brings an incredible sense of Africa to SoHo. Highlighted in the gallery exhibits is Shona tribal art, a contemporary art form which originates from Zimbabwe. Considered one of the most important movements ever to have hailed from Africa beginning in the 1950’s, Shona art is said have been an influence in works by artist Pablo Picasso, founder of the Modernist movement. Despite a lack of formal training, the artistic skills of the Shona sculptors have been passed down by generation. Each piece of art is hand-carved, the artist himself having no pre-conceived idea of what the final outcome may be. Shona art explores the worlds of spirituality, mythology and reality, combining the three elements to convey the sentiments and experiences of humanity within the African culture. Knowledge and understanding of the stone as an essential part of the Earth gives the artist a deeply rooted spiritual connection to his work. By chiseling away the stone he is releasing the spirit trapped within. The result is an art form drawn from both reality and abstract symbolism, thus connecting the tangible world with the unseen ethereal world.
