Winning Ice Systems only produces real water ice skating rinks and with good reason. Many ice rink manufacturers have begun offering synthetic ice rinks, drawn to their lower price points and simpler maintenance. Synthetic ice is made from special polymers or plastics that are smooth enough to skate on. The trouble with it is that it's harder to skate on than true ice because there is obviously more resistance to the skater. And because of this extra resistance synthetic ice will dull skate blades very quickly--sometimes in only a matter of hours. This resistance also has negative effects on the synthetic ice itself, and causes it to break down and as it does it will give off shavings which have been taken off by the skates.
