Energy Drinks... Good or Bad?
A good friend of mine, Kelly Daniels wrote to me telling me about an article on from the USA Volleyball Sports Medicine and Performance Commission called, "Energy Drinks and Volleyball. It is an information article about the rise in popularity of energy drinks, marketed largely by the soft-drink industry.
As a parent, coach, and parent, I have also become increasingly aware of the companies that market the drink to the young, active set, promising increased performance and "more energy." Most of these claims are pure crap. As the article points out, "the only substance in these drinks to have any significant effects for athletes is caffeine." This is where I tell you, dear volleyball player, read, read, read. You will find some studies that show significant improvement in endurance and performance with caffeine intact, and other studies that show no real improvement. Look at who's funding the study, that will usually tell you how it is slanted.
The bottom line for any athlete to increase his or her performance is proper nutrition, plenty of water, and proper exercise. Do read the article linked above and do get out and PLAY!
