Description

Homestead Publishing Company means weekly community newspapers in Harford County, Maryland - a bustling East Coast community at the head of the Chesapeake Bay. Homestead's oldest and largest newspaper, The Aegis, has been publishing Harford County's history from its Bel Air, Maryland headquarters since 1856. Its second oldest publication, The Record, has been publishing Upper Bay history since 1868.

Homestead was formed by the merger of Shield Press and Susquehanna Publishing Co., owners of The Aegis and The Record, respectively, in June 1989. Today it is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Baltimore Sun Co. which is owned by Tribune Company of Chicago. The company is named after the Homestead, the family farm of John D. Worthington Jr. who published The Aegis from 1920 until his death in 1964. His grandson, John D. Worthington IV, is publisher today.

Homestead Publishing Company is on Hays Street in downtown Bel Air in a recently expanded building. Its commercial printing operation, based entirely in Bel Air, has recently grown by leaps and bounds with boosted frequency of The Aegis to biweekly publication and additional printing work associated with the Baltimore Sun Co.'s purchase of Patuxent Publishing Company in 1998.
