On the day of the Kansas Primary election I was driving to work and noticed an apartment complex along my route that was flying the Kansas flag upside down. It was probably just a mistake, but immediately I thought it was someone trying to make a statement. Flying a flag upside down means you’re in distress. Is Kansas in distress?

An essay in The New York Times today entitled ”How to Make Sure Children Are Scientifically Illiterate“ says, “But perhaps more worrisome than a political movement against science is plain old ignorance. The people determining the curriculum of our children in many states remain scientifically illiterate. And Kansas is a good case in point.”

Scientific illiteracy is a problem, sure, but so is the regular garden-variety illiteracy unless I now live in sasnaK instead of Kansas.
