Terrace History

Before Terrace was occupied by European settlers, area First Nations occupied this region for more than 5,000 years. This area is one of the oldest most continuously occupied areas in the world.

2005 marked the 100th anniversary of our city’s founder arriving in the Skeena Valley. Terrace commemorates this occasion each March 10, a day we call Founder’s Day.

In 1905 a man named George Little arrived in the Skeena Valley after snowshoeing through the deep snow of the Kitimat trail. His faith in developing a community here was contagious and soon pioneers were flooding the area surrounded by “terraces”, hence the city’s name. Riverboats were widely used in this area from the late 1800s until 1912 when the railroad provided a more efficient means of transportation. The introduction of the railroad ensured growth for this area and Little responded by establishing a sawmill to keep up with the demand for railway ties. He also donated 47 acres of land to the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway. In 1927 Terrace was incorporated. In 1955, Little rode the first CNR train to Kitimat following the same route he had trekked 50 years before when he first came to Terrace.
