Description
Stevens Boatworks is a traditional boatyard located in historical Chester, on the South Shore of Nova Scotia. The yard traces its history back five generations to Tancook Island off the South Shore of Nova Scotia. Here, Amos Stevens in the late 1800's became known for developing the famous Tancook Whaler.
In 1945, Amos' great grandson, Gerald Stevens returned from the war and built the boatyard in Chester. Times had changed, and the post-war economy had created a new market for high-quality, affordable sail and power yachts. Stevens Boatworks opened its doors and began building sloops and schooners, as well as the traditional workboats.
Many large and small boats were launched from this yard over the next half-century, from the drawing boards of designers such as Howard Chapelle, Sparkman Stevens, Francis Herreshoff, and others. The noted author and yachtsman Ian Nicholson purchased his first yacht from this yard in 1949 and single-handed it to England, an impressive feat for both man and vessel in those days.
