- The shade cover industry is relatively new in the United States, having been established in the Southern Hemisphere (Australia and South Africa) initially. The initial designs offered in the United States were essentially copies of structures already proven in the Australian and South African communities. The first structures erected in the United States were in Dallas, Texas in the late 1980s by a South African expatriate. Until that time, awnings (small canopies or covers generally attached to a building façade) were the only shade structures in use.
