Snow Waste - A Maine Novel

Description

U.S. Jumpers Get High on Plastic

U.S. Nordic Combined ski team members have just finished a mini ski jumping camp on Howelsen Hill, Steamboat Springs, CO. Don’t double check your calendar - it is really early June and the jumpers are really flying off Howelson Hill's 75 meter jump; all thanks to porcelain and plastic.

Making the jump a year round training and competition arena has been the goal of the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club (SSWSC) and it was certainly appreciated by the U.S. Nordic team members who plan to return for more training in July.

The consistency of the hill is good for comparing jumps of different skiers and in aiding critical assessment of individual attempts. Specifically engineered and built so water is constantly run on the porcelain track leading up to take off removes any variables in conditions. The green colored plastic landing area is also kept wet and slippery to provide the sliding service to run out the jump.
