About Us

ShackletonThomas is a Vermont based company located in a 180-year-old mill that specializes in making fine handmade furniture, pottery and accessories. In an age where speed is prized over quality and character, where age-old artistic and craft traditions have been compromised by mass automation, ShackletonThomas has remained true to its roots - authenticity of product and process.

We are one of the few remaining companies of our size in the United States that still manufactures products one by one using extensive handwork. ShackletonThomas employs a dedicated group of people who share a special devotion to their craft and the love of making beautiful, everyday objects of art that endure for generations. Each piece of furniture and pottery has been designed and made to reflect the philosophy that extensive handwork creates a product that "has soul and life."

Our Story

ShackletonThomas began as a merger of Miranda Thomas’ pottery studio and Charles Shackleton’s furniture workshop, and has since grown into a lifestyle brand representing an eclectic European style as well as a more purposeful way of living, taking into account environmental and social sensibilities. Although today our core product lines remain handmade furniture and pottery, we continue to develop and add new products that complement our core product lines. When you purchase a product from ShackletonThomas, you can be certain that it is made employing extensive handwork and the highest quality materials available to create an heirloom that will endure for generations.

Philosophy and Values

Authenticity

In an age where speed is prized over quality and character, where age-old artistic and craft traditions have been compromised by mass automation, ShackletonThomas has remained true to its roots - authenticity of product and process.

We are one of the few remaining companies in this country that still manufactures products using extensive hand work. We take great pride in our work, our employees and in the way we conduct our business, and in owning a piece from ShackletonThomas we hope that you will too.

Environmental Responsibility

ShackletonThomas is committed to continuous improvement in developing an environmentally responsible workplace. A hallmark of ShackletonThomas products is the extensive degree of handwork using traditional tools and methods. Because the workshop and studio do not employ the widespread use of large machinery, we use less energy to produce our products.

Sawdust from the furniture workshop is recycled and used for bedding for cattle. Our furniture finishes use organic materials - wax and flax seed derivatives. In addition to sourcing lumber from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified forests, minimizing energy in the workshop, and recycling where possible, the Pottery uses only natural materials, free of toxic elements such as lead and boron. Glazes developed in-house are non-toxic for both the maker and the user. In-depth knowledge of the raw materials allows the potters to draw out the natural beauty of the materials, to produce products that are nontoxic and safe to use, and which will maintain their durability over time.

Social Responsibility

ShackletonThomas is proud to be a part of the central Vermont community, and supports a wide range of local, regional, statewide, and global causes with an emphasis on the arts and the environment. Located in a 180-year-old woolen mill in Bridgewater, Vermont, the workshops make use of an existing historical structure, with the aim of drawing interest and revitalization to what has been an important community center. From hosting an annual open house for 400 of our "closest friends" to supporting local artists, ShackletonThomas believes that facilitating and supporting community connections brings about vibrancy and community health, which ultimately adds to the quality of life in the region.

Slow Living

Bigger and faster is not always better. We believe that objects made slowly, by hand, have qualities and characteristics that cannot be replicated by machine. The emphasis on quality rather than quantity is a value we place on making and using our products. This philosophy of making our products is one we apply to living, the emphasis on quality of life and appreciating the inherent beauty of your surroundings.

With endless consumer choices, our customers seek out our products because our work is not only beautiful and functional, but also represent a way of living. We come into contact with objects in our home nearly every day of our life, and being mindful about how and where your home furnishings were made can provide both qualitative and quantitative benefits that endure.
