- Research for this project took one summer. The poets were limited according to three anthologies of poetry: Gallimard’s anthologies of 19th and 20th century French poetry and the Bouquin anthology of the last thousand years of French poetry. The classical composers were limited according to two filters: for the 19th century, the index from Fritze Noske’s book on mélodie titled French song from Berlioz to Duparc, and for 20th century, that of Hachette’s La Musique du XXe sciècle. Both indices were then cross referenced with The New Grove Dictionary of Music (1980 edition), which was the chief arbiter in determining what went in and what stayed out. Both the composers and the song titles are limited to listings featured in the New Grove’s sometimes selective catalogs of works.
