Title

Patient Safety First: Identifying, Collecting, and Developing Clinical and Educational Resources to Improve Patient Safety in Surgical Settings

Description

The Patient Safety First program is part of the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses' (AORN's) broader patient safety initiative. It was started in 2002 by the AORN Presidential Commission on Patient Safety for the purpose of providing direction for AORN patient safety activities and assisting members in meeting the JCAHO's National Patient Safety Goals.

Also in 2002, AORN took the lead in creating The Council on Surgical and Perioperative Safety, a coalition of organizations whose members are directly involved in the care of patients undergoing surgical or other invasive procedures. The purpose of the Council is to provide a mechanism for the member organizations to collaborate to improve the care of the patients they serve. The Council’s mission is to promote a culture of patient safety and a collaborative workplace environment for and among the members of the Council organizations. Member organizations include AORN, ACS, ASA, AANA, ASPAN, AASPA, and AST.

On this web site, health care professionals, consumers, and industry personnel will find AORN resources, general news items, article references, links to other organizations, education and events, and legislative and regulatory information related to perioperative patient safety.
