Title

Camille Nghiem-Phu, Naturopathic Doctor

Description

Naturopathic medicine is a comprehensive system of diagnosis and treatment that links scientific research with the healing powers of nature. Naturopathic doctors address the cause of illness by acknowledging the body’s inherent ability to heal itself, rather than simply treating or suppressing the symptoms of the illness. NDs do not concentrate solely on one part of body. Instead they look at every organ or system as part of a whole, and if one part is suffering, then the whole system must be taken into consideration. NDs take their patient’s physical, mental and emotional elements into account to obtain a better understanding of the patient as an individual, and thus develop the most appropriate treatment and prevention plan. Naturopathic medicine is distinguished by the six principles on which its practice is based: The Healing Power of Nature: The body is intelligent and heals itself in an ordered process. Naturopathic doctors facilitate this process by removing obstacles to healing and recovery. To Treat the Cause: Instead of only dealing with the symptoms of which the patient complains, NDs investigate for the root problem(s) which is causing these symptoms, and aim toward eliminating it. First, do no harm: Naturopathic doctors respect guidelines that involve minimizing the risk of harmful side-effects, and using the gentlest methods to diagnose and treat. Doctor as Teacher: Naturopathic doctors aim for long-lasting optimal health in their patients, and offer lifetime suggestions to achieve good health in a changing world. Treating the Whole Person: Conventional medicine tends to treat only specific symptoms. NDs take the individual’s physical, mental, emotional factors into consideration. Prevention: The aim is not to simply treat a problem once it has started, but to strive to prevent problems from starting in the first place. With naturopathic medicine, the patient has the knowledge to prevent problems from beginning as well as from recurring. Asian Medicine and Acupuncture A system of medicine based on balancing the Yin and Yang energies of the body as well as the flow of Qi (energy) through meridian pathways. The ancient orient has long recognized the relationship between mind, body and the environment in the development of disease. Herbs and the insertion of needles at specific points along the body harmonize the internal flow of energies to enhance healing, alleviate pains and improve overall sense of well-being. Nutrition Considering what we eat and drink is perhaps the most important step we can take along the road to achieving optimal health. Naturopathic doctors emphasize understanding the impact of our food choices, and may recommend diets tailored to the individual, nutritional supplements such as vitamins, minerals and enzymes, in order to match the therapy designed specifically for the patient. Botanical (Herbal) Medicine Botanical Medicine is the use of standardized extracts of herbs according to documented research on their therapeutic usage. Standardized extracts ensure exact amounts of the known active ingredients of the herb. The use of plants for healing dates back to the beginning of civilization and is the foundation of modern pharmacology. Drugs often contain the same substance as plants but in a much altered state which can cause many side effects. Homeopathic Medicine This system matches a pattern of symptoms characteristic to the patient with minute doses of a substance. It is based on the principle that like remedies cure like diseases, and that these remedies are designed to treat the whole person, not just a few symptoms. Homeopathic remedies work with the body to help stimulate the body’s self-healing mechanism, and are therefore highly individual in selection. Lifestyle Counseling Guidance in stress management, balancing the mental-emotional state of the person, and increasing the physical endurance of the each individual in today’s busy lifestyle. Naturopathic Manipulations A series of hands-on treatments for the spine, joints and soft tissues. Hydrotherapy Hot and cold water are used to stimulate immunity and circulation. Camille Nghiem-Phu, B.Sc., N.D., is a registered and licensed naturopathic doctor who completed her medical training at the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine. She graduated from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Biology and a Bachelor of Arts degree (minor) in French. While working in France, she witnessed how well naturopathic medicine could be integrated into a medical system. Visiting countries in Asia reinforced this philosophy and Camille realized she had found her true calling. Camille constantly reviews clinical research in both conventional and alternative medicine to evaluate potential applications and provide improved care to her patients. She consistently attends seminars and workshops in Traditional Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture, naturopathic therapeutics and detoxification. Camille practices Hatha yoga and meditation as elements of her continual process of personal growth and wholeness.
