I am a licensed fishing, hunting and camping guide in Newfoundland and Labrador and was extensively involved in the fight in the 1990's to save our salmon rivers and outdoor areas from privatization.This strong public opposition was successful in persuading the government that outdoor privatization was not in the public interest. The public debate is summarized in an article I wrote for the Spring 2000 issue of the environmental journal Alternatives.

During the privatization debate I also drafted an Outdoor Bill of Rights which opponents of privatization could put before government members as an illustration of the necessity of permanent legislative protection against future outdoor privatization initiatives. The opposition Progressive Conservative Party have promised to pass an Outdoor Bill of Rights into law when they form the government:

Prior to being called to the Bar in 1991, I worked as an offshore fisheries observer for the Government of Canada and spent five years on oil rigs on the Grand Banks and in the Labrador Sea co-ordinating iceberg towing.
