About the NRSO
The Northern Rivers Symphony Orchestra (NRSO) is a non-profit organisation offering a wide variety of high quality, affordable musical productions to the communities of the Southeast Queensland and Northern New South Wales regions of Australia. Originally an eighteen-member chamber ensemble founded by Barry Singh in 1993 in Murwillumbah, the Orchestra now draws as many as 60 players from as far afield as Lismore, Brisbane and Toowoomba.
By 1999 an orchestra of over fifty players was regularly performing such large-scale works as Dvorak's Symphony No. 9 and Tchaikovsky's ballet music. It was therefore no longer really a chamber orchestra, and so the current name was adopted. Since then the Orchestra has continued to offer a wide variety of music including symphonies, concertos for violin, piano, bassoon, flute and harp, Viennese waltzes, and two full ballets - Swan Lake and Coppelia - with the Gold Coast City Ballet. The long list of international and Australian artists who have recently appeared with the NRSO include the Dragon Tenors, harpist Sebastien Lipman, pianist Simon Tedeschi, tenor Peter Brocklehurst, soprano Liza Beamish, baritone Henry Ruhl, tenor Lachlan Baker, pianist Young-Ah Kim Hauser, and cellist Matthew Farrell among many others. The NRSO has also twice appeared on ABC's award-winning Australian Story, the first occasion marking our Brisbane debut at the glorious Queensland Performing Arts Centre (QPAC).
In addition to the full Symphony Orchestra, the NRSO maintains a variety of smaller chamber groups, including the Camerata. This group of select musicians from the NRSO performs high quality chamber music and brings wonderful classical music to venues unable to accommodate a sixty-piece orchestra. Other string chamber groups formed as of 2004 include the Goldberg Trio, the Gabrielli Quartet, and the Geminiani Quintet.
