Description

This is a page about our Border Collie, Ruby. We adopted her in June of 2004 shortly after our previous Border Collie, Kalee, passed away. Her birthday is October 16, 2002. We were originally looking for a Border Collie puppy but we were unable to find one at that time so then we decided to check and see if there were any Border Collies available from the Animal Shelters. We found info about her on the internet through http://www.petfinder.com. I drove about 75 miles to Minnesota Valley Humane Society in Burnsville, MN to see her and it didn't take long to decide she would be our new pet. She was a little underweight but was a beautiful dog. Ruby was not at all reluctant to come with me especially when she was allowed to get into my mini van. She was already named Ruby by her previous owners so Ruby it stayed. Her previous owners apparently had small children that made her a little nerous and anxioius. Most Border Collies don't do real well with youg children. They seem to bring out the Border Collie herding instinct.

Ruby is a great companion to our family. She loves to guard our bird feeders from the squirrels and chase chipmunks and other little critters when she goes for walks in the woods. Another favorite pastime is playing in the water from the hose and biting at it. In the winter she likes to help get rid of the snow by biting at it as my husband shovels it. She also likes to ride in the car, what "All American" Dog doesn't? Anyway, she gets into the back of my mini van and as soon as we start the engine she's off. Twirling and spinning like a small tornado. She stops after a mile or two from home but does it intermitently throughout her ride. Ruby also likes to play balloon and hide and seek with her toys in the house.

Oh, I can't forget to tell you about some of Ruby's talents. She is a registered member of the North American Sheep Dog Society and has a natural instinct for herding but has never had any official training. She can twirl around in a circle (or if she's not feeling too ambitious it might be a half circle) on her hind feet while we hold a treat in the air. She can also find one of her toys when you hide it while she's in the other room. She can also sit nice with her front paws in the air. And she can shake and wave on command. She knows the basics like fetch, sit and lay plus she will also get my slippers for me. Although she is not always enthusiastic about getting them - like it's a chore she doesn't always feel like doing.
