Description

Mike Malloy of Naples, Florida creates unique and exotic butterfly art pieces made from real butterflies collected from commercial butterfly farms around the world. No butterflies were killed, captured or are endangered and were bred on farms expressly for the purpose of preservation.

Having lived their full life span of approximately 7 - 30 days, the butterflies die naturally and then are gathered by workers and wrapped in paper for sale to collectors. Butterfly farming provides an excellent source of income for the owners of these properties, thus preventing them from selling the land for logging, or clearing it for cattle raising and in turn preserving the rain forests. Butterfly farming also helps to increase the butterfly population. In the wild only approximately 5% of butterfly eggs survive to adulthood.

After receiving the papered butterflies from all over the world, Mike uses a special process to re-hydrate them. After re-hydration and a lengthy process of spreading the wings they are mounted on pegs, arranged in a flight like position and preserved in acrylic boxes and panels for eternity.
