MyFreeCounter was started in late 2002 by Matthew Pegler. It started out he simply wanted a counter for his website, but realized how hard it was to find a good service. He wrote the scripts to make his own counter, and then realized he could allow anyone to make a counter with only slight modification to the system. He did just that, registered a domain name, and rented a server to start the site.
The site grew quickly. People put counters on their sites and wrote about how great the service was. Soon more than 10,000 people were using the service and the number was still growing. As the site grew, so did its demands for the server it was hosted on. We needed to move the site from Neon HQ's servers, over to Cyber Server's servers. We were with Cyber Servers for about 3 years, and now we have had to move again, this time to a much larger server owned by URL Host. All of these companies are great hosts and I would recommend them to anyone, they simply could not handle the load MyFreeCounter caused.
When the site started out, MyFreeCounter.com was taken, and we were not able to afford to pay for anything more than the $10/year domain name charge, so we could not buy it from the owners, but over the years, through ads and Premium Memberships, we have raised money and purchased that domain name. Now both domains point to the same site.
