Thoughts on the American Civil War and its preservation | Mike's Civil War Musings

Description

About

I live in Geneva, located in Kane County in the far west suburbs (40 miles) of Chicago in a town of about 19,000. The town was founded in 1858 with many of the county's residents serving in the Civil War. The original County Courthouse actually has a monument in front dedicated to the Kane County soldiers killed in the war. Located nearby is the site of Camp Kane, which served as a recruiting and training center for the 8th and 17th Illinois Cavalry Units ad the home of Gen. John Fransworth. I live there with my wife and 4 children.

By day I am a Director of a Software Engineering dept. that develops systems for Wireless 9-1-1. Chances are if you dial 9-1-1 from your cell phone, you'll get routed by the system my team developed.

My interest in the Civil War really took off about 5 years ago after reading Michael Shaara's Killer Angels. I read his book in about 2 days. After that I consumed the other 2 books in the trilogy, Gods and General and The Last Full Measure by his son, Jeff. I then read Jeff's prequel book, Gone for Soldiers. Since then I've built quite a Civil War library.
