In 2002, the Lynchburg Symphony Orchestra began planning a celebration of the orchestra's 20th anniversary during the 2003-2004 concert season. Incorporating a number of objectives contained in the orchestra's current long- range plan, this planning included presentation of more guest artists, collaboration with other performing arts organizations, and seeking additional financial support from private and corporate donors that would enable the LSO to expand its musical and educational offerings to our community.

As we look back on the 20th Anniversary Season and ahead to the LSO's third decade of performances that begins with this afternoon's concert, there are a number of recent indicators of community support for the orchestra that we would like to share with the LSO family.

Although concert attendance and revenue from ticket sales experienced declines in recent years, we are pleased to report that attendance at the four concerts included in the LSO's 20th Anniversary Season averaged 840 per concert, nearly three times the average attendance of the previous concert season! When the attendance at this year's Dr. and Mrs. Robert R. Bowen Free Concert is added to this total, it is gratifying to realize that the orchestra attracted nearly 7,500 people to its concerts during its 2003-2004 season.
