Welcome to Language Magazine, The Language Authority

Description

First published in 1997, Language Magazine (formerly American Language Review) is the popular periodical of language, education and communication. In 2001, Language Magazine increased its publication schedule from 6 to 12 issues a year to answer the demand of readers (including department heads, supervisors, government officials and other decision-makers) to be kept up to date with developments in the fast paced world of language and literacy education. Language Magazine is an influential forum of information for language-related professions and businesses -- it was the only publication chosen by the U.S. Census Bureau to partner in its “Census in the Schools” program in 2000. In 2003, Language Magazine received the prestigious Media & Communications Award from the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE).

Steven Donahue has a Masters degree in TESOL, a graduate certificate in Linguistics, and is pursuing his doctorate in Adult Education at Florida International University. He has taught at Miami-Dade Community College in South Florida and trained pre-service ESOL teachers at Florida Atlantic University. He has studied, spoken and written Arabic and Classical and Biblical Greek. He is a frequent visitor to Washington, D.C., and his work covering Language, Distance Education, and Learning Software issues has been covered in The Chronicle of Higher Education, National Public Radio and the New York Times. Donahue's involvement in the language area is comprehensive and includes a forthcoming book entitled, How To Raise a Bilingual Child Even If You're Not.

Walt Wolfram is the William C. Friday Distinguished Professor at North Carolina State University, where he also directs the North Carolina Language and Life Project. He has pioneered research on social and ethnic dialects since the 1960s, authoring or co-authoring over 15 books and 200 articles on social and ethnic dialects of American English. His current research involves historically and culturally isolated communities in Eastern North Carolina and in the Bahamas. Professor Wolfram is also vitally concerned with the application of sociolinguistic information to social and educational problems and the dissemination of knowledge about dialects to the public. In this connection, he has been involved in the production of several TV documentaries on dialect diversity and the development of dialect awareness curricula for the schools. Walt Wolfram is President of the Linguistic Society of America and Past-President of the American Dialect Society.
