Description

Julia Serano is an Oakland-based writer, musician, and spoken word artist. She is a poetry slam champion and a regular feature at San Francisco Bay Area spoken word and queer events. Julia has contributed articles and poems to queer, feminist, and pop culture magazines such as Bitch Magazine, Clamor, Kitchen Sink, and Transgender Tapestry, and interviews and excerpts of her work have appeared in The Believer, The San Francisco Chronicle, GenderTalk, and on NPR. As a musician, she is the lyricist-guitarist-vocalist for the noisy pop trio Bitesize, who have released two critically acclaimed CDs, toured up and down the West Coast and received college radio airplay nationwide. Between her work as a musician and as a performance poet, Julia has performed at such diverse events as the 2004 and 2005 National Queer Arts Festivals, San Francisco Pride's Main Stage & Dyke March Stage, Oakland Pride, Ladyfest Bay Area, Outcry 2005, NXNW, Noise Pop, Folsom Street Fair, and the UC Berkeley production of The Vagina Monologues.

As a writer and spoken word artist on the subject of gender, Julia has gained attention as of late in the women¹s and queer communities. She has been invited to perform spoken word or give presentations on gender and trans issues at numerous colleges and universities (including UC Berkeley, UCLA, San Francisco State University, and San José State University) and her essays and poems have been used as teaching materials in college-level gender studies courses across the country. Her background as a writer, performer, trans activist, and biologist makes her a unique voice on the subject of gender. She has the rare gift of being able to present (and often critique) difficult-to-grasp concepts from feminism, biology, and post-modern gender theory, and to interweave these ideas with her performance poetry and her personal experiences as a trans woman. Her charming, playful, and down to earth delivery and her empathy for both the male and female experience has the unique ability to resonate with both queer and straight audiences alike.

Currently, Julia is writing a book of personal essays about trans women, gender, and feminism, tentatively titled Feminine Wiles, to be published by Seal Press in 2007. She has contributed personal essays to several upcoming women- and queer-themed anthologies, and has plans to release a DVD of her performance poetry entitled Six Small Words.
