It was at an early age that Derrald discovered photography. One his first memories of photography occurred on a family trip to the Tetons. “It was early in the morning, just past sunrise we stopped at a turnoff in the road. It was a calm morning and the reflection of the mountain range of off Jenny Lake created a sense of peace and serenity. I knew this was an image I wanted to capture. At the time I had a small Kodak camera and I took the shot.” Later, when the photograph was developed Derrald knew that he would always be drawn to photography.
In college Derrald took as many photography courses as he could where he learned about exposure, technique, darkroom methodology, and he was exposed to a wide range of photographers. “I always knew I wanted to photograph landscapes and wildlife, however, I always want to expand and learn about other genres within photography and college was part of that process.”
Derrald’s experience in college spurred his desire to read and learn more about the art. He reviewed techniques and compositions of many artists and read photography magazines and articles in order to cultivate his own style. He moved into using bold colors from his previous days with black and white. With photography, Derrald tries to capture the majestic essence of the location. “I want to take that point in time when the composition, light, and mood converge and produce an image that conveys my feelings and experience. There is so much beauty and wonder in the world that must be shared and one of my goals is to do that beauty justice through my photography.”
