- Today Annie and I finally visited the Texas Renaissance Festival for “Pirate Adventure” weekend. What a strange land… a subculture of people who don’t dress as pirates, knights, or faeries, THEY ARE pirates, knights and faeries. At times I actually believed that I had in fact gone back in time. That is, until a swashbucklin’ mate came striding past while talking on his cell phone. The day was full of these anachronisms, like the in-character pirate couple who was pushing there two children around in a stroller, or the pirate who we saw entering the gate with his modern-day girlfriend. (what is this girl thinking? “Hi, I’m here with my boyfriend. He’s a pirate.”) Who are these people during the rest of the week? Is he a suit-and-tie businessman? Is she my grocery checker? For a lot of the merchants, I imagine they are something like modern day gypsies, traveling from festival to festival and living out of a car or a tent or a mobile home, and in this way, truly becoming their character.
