Jan Palmer runs a language-based ABA classroom based on the principles of verbal behaviour. This is a model for a program for students with autism and other developmental disabilities at the secondary level in a public high school, Grades 8-12. The school is located in North Vancouver, BC, Canada.
The program offers a continuum where students progressively develop communication and social skills which will allow them to be successfully integrated into classes with typical peers. The focus is on teaching routines and using visual supports. They look at the function of behaviours and develop positive behaviour plans for their students.
The program has approximately 16 students enrolled in the "Functional Skills" program in which students receive direct instruction in one to one, small group and large group settings across the school day. They use discrete trial and natural environment teaching. The classes model regular classes and follow the rotation of the rest of the school. They offer keyboarding, PE, art, music, socials and science, English and math. Each student has an intensive program and their goals are based on the ABLLS. Once students are able to learn in a regular classroom some of their instruction is moved there as electives.
