Description

The Hiram Plan

Hiram is the only college in the country that offers students two formats for scholastic study. Called the Hiram Plan, our academic calendar improves on the traditional, two-semester structure common to most liberal arts schools. Like other schools, Hiram's academic year consists of two, 15-week semesters. Each semester is further divided into two sessions- a 12-week, during which students take three academic courses, and a 3-week, when students focus on a single course.

The 12-week session is Hiram's long-term learning segment. Students explore a number of academic subjects in a time frame that enables extensive research and study. In the 12-week, students take three courses. Classes meet two or three times per week for two hours a session. This time frame enables detailed study of several topics and emphasizes long-term comprehension and conceptual development. Courses typically culminate with a detailed research paper or other final project that reflects both the depth and breadth of knowledge cultivated during the session.

During the 3-week session, Hiram students are immersed in a highly-focused exploration of one topic. In the 3-week, students enroll in a single course that meets four days a week for an average of three to four hours per session. During this session, students and faculty explore one topic in-depth and intensively. This single course format removes other academic obligations from your schedule. It also allows faculty to be truly creative in how they teach. That may mean a day-trip to the renowned Cleveland Museum of Art or several weeks studying in Malaysia. As an upper-class student, you may use the 3-week to fulfill an internship requirement at off-campus sites like the Cleveland Clinic, or you might use the session to complete a research project at Hiram's on-campus field station.
