Description
In 1987, I was required to write a Curriculum Vitae projecting 10 years into the future, as part of the selection process for a training in bodywork. At the time I had a dream of founding a holistic education centre, bringing together teachers, therapists, and counselors in various disciplines and fields, with the common goal of Self Knowledge and evolving a lifestyle, for ourselves, our children, and our brothers and sisters all around us, that reflects and reinforces this Knowledge. The fantasy CV stated that in 1992 I had started such a centre in a peaceful country setting and that it was called Heaven and Earth. More than a centre, it was to be a relatively self-sufficient community with its own organic garden, a school focused on true education – fostering creative thinking and responsibility rather than restrictive indoctrination, involving the participation of the parents. The centre also offered classes, workshops, and retreats welcoming the influence of visiting teachers with similar orientations.
Five years later, (1992), I was driving back from the Eastern Townships outside Montreal with my partner who had just co-taught a week long Yoga retreat with me. I had just bought a house in the west end of Montreal, with the intention of transforming it into a holistic health centre, and we were discussing the choice of a name. She asked me what quality I wanted to convey in the name. I said: “ something that would suggest integrating body, mind, and spirit”. As we were speaking in French, she said: “Ciel et Terre ?”. In my conscious memory I had forgotten about the CV I had written five years earlier, nor was she aware of it, so I was quite impressed with the fact that she had uttered the French translation for Heaven and Earth. The rest is history. As it turns out, our centre is located in the city - accessible to the local population for regular classes, while the country setting is reserved for our weekend retreats.
As long as I can remember, my mission is to Know my Self and to realize a lifestyle that reflects and reinforces this Knowledge in myself and “others” who share this quest with me. Heaven and Earth Institute is the vehicle that has evolved from this desire.
