CATCHING THE SPIRIT OF A HERITAGE Through The Brush Of Guy Custodio
Sometime in the middle part of the Spanish colonial period a distinct style of painting developed in the Philippine Islands that took off from the prevailing religious art genre. These paintings were done almost always on woodboard, made wide use of red and black pigments and primitive in its depiction of the human figure. Not much is known about the artists who produced this type of painting but because many of those were found or have been associated to the island of Bohol, art scholars and collectors have come to call them Boholano Style Paintings or painting done by the Boholano School.
Cognizant of this beautiful and intriguing visual arts tradition that depicts the religious heritage of his adopted home-province, local artist Guy Custodio came up with an entire series of unique interpretations of a now defunct painting tradition, blending together techniques culled from hours spent contemplating available artifacts together with his exposure to similar pieces while living in Europe, thus the “iconic” look of some of his works. GUY CUSTODIO was born in Manila in 1954. After graduating from Letran University in Intramuros and University of Santo Tomas, he immigrated to California in 1972 and finished secondary at the Hollywood High.
He took courses in drawing and music at the Los Angeles City College then later joined the U.S. armed forces that gave him the opportunity to travel in Italy and Spain.
He was so moved with the renaissance art and his passion for XVIII c. Spanish painters made him permanently lived in Spain where he made his artistic career as a painter and taught modern techniques of recording studios at C.I.E.J. in Barcelona.
He came to Bohol in 1992 but ironically did his first solo art exhibits in Metro Manila later that same year with empressario Mr. George O. Dadivas, a childhood friend. From 1996 to 2003 he travelled back to Spain together with his family during summer vacations and took courses of restorations and conservations of antique arts at workshops in Barcelona with exceptional masters from the Escuela de Artes y Antiguedades (EEART, San Marcos) and the Istituto Centrale del Restauro (Roma), intensively working with frescoes, tempera, panels and other religious artifacts in Spain.
Guy Custodio's artworks are impressionist in nature. His unique works has been collected by ambassadors, diplomats, collectors and professionals internationally. His exhibits in the Philippines presented by EAI are as follows:
