Title

Flora and Fauna ~ Fine Art Batiks by Lynn Traylor

Description

Batik is an ancient method for printing fabric, believed to have originated in Java. It is a wax resist process. Fabric is dyed with special cold-water dyes, then areas of the design are masked with an application of melted wax. The wax renders the areas it is applied to waterproof, thus preventing them from absorbing further dye colors. Each color is systematically applied and waxed over until all areas have been done, then the wax is removed from the fabric, leaving the dyed-in design behind. Breaks in the surface of the wax allow dye to seep into some otherwise masked areas, resulting in the trademark "crackled" effect common to all batiks. The multiple processes required to achieve each color, and the natural tendency of the melted wax to blot rather than flow smoothly make this a much more involved process than acrylic, oil, or watercolor paintings.

I became fascinated with the medium years ago, but was frustrated with its limitations. The traditional methods did not allow for more than two or three colors to be used in an individual piece before the colors muddied. In addition, the characteristics of painting with very hot melted wax did not allow the extreme detail I was striving for.

I spent years tinkering with different means of wax and dye application, and have finally managed to arrive at techniques that allow me to achieve the detail and strong colors I desire, yet remain true to the original, ancient art form.
