- West Texas, a place where mountains meet grassy plains and winds whistle beneath impossibly starry skies, is home to Marathon, a former train-stop town with a population of 600. In the early 1900s, Marathon bustled with silver shipments and branded cattle. These days, it’s filled with art galleries and bed-and-breakfasts, including one with peculiar pastel domes and undulating arches, that make it look like a misplaced Middle Eastern temple. Yet the domes aren’t as odd as what they’re fashioned from: recycled paper.
