Description
Contaminated land remediation specialist, Envirotreat Limited, has been established since 1990. Extensive research and development activities were carried out in the first few years in order to develop a leading edge technology that would be commercially viable. The initial development was carried out under the auspices of the UK Environmental Technology Innovation Scheme (ETIS), sponsored by the UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI). The research and development programme comprised laboratory treatment and evaluation trials followed by a full-scale demonstration of the in-situ process.
The site selected for the ETIS project was a Ministry of Defence facility in West London. The land site was contaminated in one area by a variety of pollutants arising from historical usage, which included a previous chemical manufacturing operation. A range of pollutants was identified in the specific area chosen for the site trial. These included organic (coal tars, PAHs, oils etc.) and heavy metal / inorganic pollutants, in addition to general acidic and alkaline wastes. The project was satisfactorily completed in accordance with evaluation parameters defined by the UK Department of the Environment. Strict physical and chemical testing procedures were implemented similar to those utilised in the USA for the evaluation of stabilisation / solidification technologies.
As a consequence of being involved with the ETIS programme and as an acknowledgement of the technology capability on a global basis, Envirotreat was formally invited to participate in the prestigious NATO/CCMS Pilot Study on the "Evaluation of Demonstrated and Emerging Technologies for the Treatment of Contaminated Land and Ground Water". Envirotreat was accepted into the Pilot study as a nominated UK participant following peer reviews by leading experts in the USA and Europe.
