Title

Edinburgh Review

Description

Issue 110 celebrates the long and distinguished history of the Edinburgh Review. Born in the Buccleuch Place lodgings of founding editor Francis Jeffrey in 1802, the Edinburgh Review rapidly transformed the landscape of literary criticism.

No other cultural journal boasts such a list of influential previous and current contributors as Edinburgh Review – from the likes of Macaulay, Scott, Carlyle and Gladstone in the nineteenth century to, more recently, James Baldwin, R.D. Laing, Alasdair Gray and Tom Nairn.

After a mid-20th century hiatus, the new Edinburgh Review resumed publication in the late 1960s, picking up the threads of tradition and establishing a new reputation for encouraging emerging writers. Work by James Kelman, Janice Galloway and A.L. Kennedy appeared in Edinburgh Review at early stages of their careers.
