Durham Symphony Orchestra
Description
The Durham Symphony began in 1976 as an all-volunteer community orchestra, offering free concerts. The symphony was incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in 1977.
All musicians audition to perform with the orchestra, which is composed of professionally trained volunteers. Throughout its history, the DSO's mission has been to foster the appreciation of music through the production of high-quality music for and by the residents of Durham and surrounding communities.
The DSO also has an outreach program that seeks to introduce classical orchestral music to young people in the school system. Traditionally, between October and June, the DSO performs several classical concerts, a Young Artists concert, Holiday Pops, and outdoor family concerts.
