Unaffiliated with any institution, Chelsea has been publishing new, established, and soon-to-be-established voices in literature since 1958. Eclectic... lively... with an emphasis on translations, art, and cross-cultural exchange, Chelsea is one of the best "little magazines," mixing unsolicited work with occasional special features and guest edited portfolios. Longtime readers of Chelsea have learned to expect the unexpected from us, such as the first short story by Kenzaburo Oe, who was awarded the 1994 Nobel Prize for Literature. Work appearing recently in Chelsea has received the O'Henry Award and been reprinted in Best American Poetry. In short, we strive to bring to our readers' attention the best work we can find from around the world.
