The CES was established in January 1998 by a group of interdisciplinary researchers whose aim was to create a Institute for participatory eco-cultural development in Sri Lanka through research, education, awareness and community development. Institute is registered as a Non-governmental Research Institute and concerned with issues pertaining to the present eco-cultural status of Sri Lanka and advocates sustainable measures to suit the local environment and cultures.
