Description

Concerned over making decisions about abused and neglected children's lives without sufficient information, a Seattle judge conceived the idea of using trained community volunteers to speak for the best interests of these children in court. This Seattle program was so successful that soon judges across the country began utilizing citizen advocates. In 1990, the U.S. Congress encouraged the expansion of CASA with passage of the Victims of Child Abuse Act. Today more than 900 CASA programs are in operation, with 70,000 women and men serving as CASA volunteers. CASA is an acronym for Court Appointed Special Advocate.

CASA programs and CASA volunteers serve children in foster care throughout most of New Jersey, with new CASA programs starting up each year. In 2005, CASA of New Jersey was instrumental in expanding the network to include Union and Somerset Counties. In 2006, you can expect to see us open new CASA programs in Ocean and Middlesex Counties. And we won't stop until we've built a statewide network -- with a CASA presence in every NJ County.

There are over 13,000 children in out-of-home placement in New Jersey and most need your help. In 2005, about 800 CASA volunteers worked with almost 1300 of those children. The need for volunteers is great. If you can spare several hours a month, over the course of 1 to 2 years, you could be a CASA volunteer. Please contact one of the local CASA programs, to learn how.
