Title

Benefit of Support Groups Support Group for Caregivers Family Friends Supporting Cancer Patients Betty Garrett

Description

Betty E. Garrett served as an active caregiver for two years caring for her husband, Gene, who was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in April 2003. It was during this journey that she assisted Baylor University Medical Center, Dallas, Texas, in developing a support group for family and friends for cancer patients. The support group meets twice a month to discuss various topics pursuing excellence in caregiving and advocacy. It is common knowledge medical science has concentrated totally on the treatment/care of the cancer patient, but has been lacking in giving the caregiver the tools they need to ride those same waves of change.

She has written several articles on caregiving and has recently been interviewed on a radio program broadcast in 30 syndicated markets giving hope to caregivers and assisting them in being a better advocate for the cancer patient. Betty has also been appointed to the advisory board for InTouch newsletter, a publication of the Baylor Charles A. Sammons Cancer Center.

Betty is a Certified Meeting Professional with over 32 years of experience in the travel, hospitality and training industries. She received her CMP designation 1987 while receiving her Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management from LeTourneau University in 1992. Betty was named 2002 Meeting Partner of the Year by National Speakers Association and was awarded the 2001 Supplier of the Year by Meeting Professional International Dallas/Fort Worth Chapter.
