Canadian Television: A Reflection of Ourselves
Television plays a vital role in Canada's cultural landscape. Nothing equals the power of television as a source of shared experience, a builder of community and a demystifier of difference.
The creation and exhibition of distinctively Canadian programming has become a fundamental principle of Canada's broadcasting policy. However, Canada's small domestic market makes it extremely difficult to finance television programming made primarily for Canadian audiences. Left to pure market forces, certain types of distinctively Canadian and culturally significant programming would simply not be made.
The Canadian Television Fund
In response to this reality, the Canadian Television Fund was created in 1996 to support the production and broadcast of high quality, distinctively Canadian television programs. The result of a public-private partnership, the CTF is financed by contributions from the Government of Canada, the Canadian cable and direct-to-home satellite industries and Telefilm Canada.
