Description

Excerpted from the website:

In our consciousness we experience a visible reality of material forms such as the physical appearances of people, things, and events. I believe that within our experience of these concrete forms lies the essences of our psyches; a world strange and mysterious to us--a web of forces that propel us and inspire us. Some such essences are love, fear, doubt, joy, desire, or other, subtler, flickers of emotion that lead to our complex states of mind. These ever-changing abstract essences become apparent to us as they manifest and are recognized in concrete forms such as facial expressions. Whether human or fantastic, the expressive face inspires my current painting and collage processes, which are derived from my earlier mask-making work. I try to find new ways to present psyches, which are universal to a large degree. To do so, I exaggerate and transform the material face, navigating between the appearances familiar to us and the less tangible essences flowing through them. Each one of us responds to specific faces differently because we are composed of unique arrangements of essences. Although certain facial forms evoke universal reactions, I hope for my art to connect viewers to their own personal reality.
