Cataracts are a normal part of the aging process. Most Americans over the age of 65 have some level of visual dysfunction related to cataracts, though presentation is highly variable. About half of Americans aged 65 to 75 have cataracts and about 70 percent of those 75 and over can expect to have this condition. A cataract is a cloudy opacity in the lens of the eye. A normal lens is clear and lets light pass to the back of the eye or retina.
