Since coming to Myanmar (then Burma) for the first time more than 25 years ago I have been fascinated by this country: Friendly people, some of the most important archaeological sites of South East Asia and a beautiful countryside make it hard to understand why Myanmar is still a touristic 'backwater'. I have always felt that this country has an enormous potential only waiting to be discovered.

My interest in Myanmar so far resulted in two books: In a book on the country’s puppet theatre (published in 1990) and also in the popular 'Nelles Guide Myanmar' (with me as co-author; first edition in 1997) which has been translated from German into English, French, Italian and Dutch languages.

I have published my doctoral thesis on the Burmese marionette theatre. In order to attain a better understanding of Myanmar and its people I also studied Burmese at the Humboldt University of Berlin.
