It's been more than a decade since Jamaicans got their first taste of Carnival back in the 1980's. Then a seasonal past-time of those familiar with things Trinidadian, Carnival is today an almost year-long passion for thousands of Jamaicans, here and abroad, who now plan their social agendas and budgets around what is perhaps the island's largest and most highly organized national event.
THE MAS CAMP VILLAGE represents a group of individuals and Mas Bands seasoned in the affairs of Carnival and the careful production of its many exciting events. In fact, one of the group's Mas Bands was the first to take Carnival to the streets of Jamaica. Five years ago, this newly consolidated group introduced its first and highly successful Mas Camp at Devon House, bringing more attention to the 12 week season. For the most recent carnival, Millennium Masquerade, home became the new "Mas Camp Village" just minutes away at 1c Oxford Road.
Centrally located with easy parking and even more space for the Camp, revelers quickly embraced Carnival's new address and atmosphere. The improved location proved particularly beneficial in the areas of (night) noise and accessibility, for which there were no complaints. Bacchanal Jamaica anticipated these benefits and prudently arranged to lease 1c Oxford Road on a long-term basis. This level of commitment encouraged the group to apply a higher degree of attention to detail in terms of aesthetics and amenities, both areas directly impacting visitors to the Camp. As a result, parking was more secure, the entrance and exit ways better controlled, bars were wider, stage bigger and washroom facilities more comfortable. The result was the best operated Mas Camp to date.
