The American Traffic Safety Services Association (ATSSA) partnered with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) to develop a comprehensive in-class presentation to help educate motorists of the dangers associated with roadway work zones. Each year, over 1,000 people - the majority of which are motorists -senselessly die in roadway work zones. The 90-minute PowerPoint course on CD-ROM titled, “Work Zone Traffic Violator Awareness Program”„ is designed not only to educate motorists of the hazards associated with work zones, but also to provide safe driving tips and methods motorists can utilize to ensure safe transit through work zones.
Many roadway safety professionals including law enforcement and departments of motor vehicles already agree this type of training is long overdue. “Roadway work zones are here to stay for the unforeseeable future and you literally cannot make even a short trip without encountering one of them. This ‘to-the-point’ course will undoubtedly help save lives and any driver education teacher should welcome it for incorporation into their curriculum,” said Stafford County Virginia Sheriff Charles E. Jett.
This new course can be easily assimilated into already existing driver education curriculum, either in-full, or in-part. The CD-ROM includes a PowerPoint presentation and two hard-hitting videos, as well as the necessary forms to use in conjunction with driver improvement clinics.
