- The Association of Emergency Physicians (AEP) is an association of practicing emergency physicians, regardless of board certification status. AEP exists to represent the "in the trenches" emergency physicians, those who primarily practice clinical emergency medicine.
- AEP was formed in 1993 by several practicing emergency physicians who were and are concerned about ABEM's closure of the practice track (in 1988) for board certification in emergency medicine, thus allowing only EM-residency trained physicians to take their exam. Since then, ACEP has followed in similar fashion with a decision to offer membership only to EM-residency trained and/or ABEM or AOBEM-certified physicians.
